About Butchart Garden

Butchart Gardens, a floral masterpiece on Vancouver Island’s South Island, enchants visitors with its 55 acres of vibrant blooms just 23 km from Victoria. This National Historic Site, born from a reclaimed limestone quarry, features the iconic Sunken Garden, fragrant Rose Garden, and serene Japanese Garden. Seasonal displays, from spring tulips to winter lights, create a year-round spectacle, while the Mediterranean Garden showcases drought-tolerant plants. Perfect for a leisurely stroll, the gardens offer a tranquil escape with stunning views of Saanich Inlet. Whether you’re a horticulture enthusiast or seeking a peaceful retreat, Butchart Gardens promises a magical experience, blending natural beauty with artistic design in the heart of Vancouver Island’s southern region.

Butchart Gardens began in 1904 when Jennie Butchart transformed her husband Robert’s exhausted limestone quarry into the Sunken Garden, sparking a legacy that spans over a century. Now a National Historic Site, the gardens attract over a million visitors annually, offering five distinct areas: the Italian Garden with its bronze statues, the Rose Garden with 2,500 rose plants, and the Japanese Garden with its authentic Torii gate. The gardens host events like summer evening concerts and a spectacular Christmas lights display, complete with an outdoor ice rink. Visitors can dine at the Blue Poppy Restaurant or enjoy afternoon tea at the Dining Room, both featuring local ingredients. Firework shows light up the summer sky, and the Seed & Gift Store offers unique souvenirs, making Butchart Gardens a cultural and horticultural gem.
