About Metchosin

Metchosin, a rural coastal haven on Vancouver Island’s South Island, offers a peaceful escape 25 km from Victoria. Known for its farming heritage and stunning shoreline along the Juan de Fuca Strait, Metchosin features rolling hills, old-growth forests, and scenic views of the Olympic Mountains. The district’s charming community, with its historic farms and artisan markets, blends seamlessly with natural beauty. Devonian Regional Park, with its lagoon and bird sanctuary, and Matheson Lake Regional Park, with its swimming holes, invite exploration. Ideal for those seeking tranquility, Metchosin provides a perfect mix of rural charm and coastal wilderness, making it an idyllic retreat near British Columbia’s capital.

Metchosin, incorporated in 1984, sits in the traditional territory of the Scia’new (Beecher Bay) First Nation, who have lived in the area for millennia, using the coast for fishing and gathering. The district’s name derives from the Lekwungen word “Smets-shosin,” meaning “place of smelts.” Today, Metchosin is celebrated for its agricultural roots, with farms like Parry Bay Sheep Farm and the Metchosin Farmers’ Market showcasing local produce. Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park, with its 5-km trail to a sandy spit and waterfall, is a highlight for birdwatching and tide pooling. The Metchosin Golf & Country Club offers a 9-hole course with ocean views, while the annual Metchosin Day festival features parades and community events. The area’s dark skies make it a prime spot for stargazing, adding to its serene appeal.
