About French Beach

French Beach, a scenic coastal park on Vancouver Island’s South Island, offers a wild retreat along the Juan de Fuca Strait, 60 km from Victoria. This 59-hectare provincial park features a pebbled beach framed by towering Douglas-fir trees, with waves crashing against the shore and views of the Olympic Mountains. A short trail leads to the beach, where driftwood logs create natural benches for picnicking. The park’s rugged beauty and salty air make it a perfect spot for a quiet escape, with the sound of the ocean providing a soothing backdrop. Ideal for families and nature lovers, French Beach delivers an authentic coastal experience near British Columbia’s capital, blending tranquility with the raw power of the Pacific.

French Beach Provincial Park, established in 1974, protects 59 hectares in the traditional territory of the T’Sou-ke First Nation, who have used the area for fishing and gathering for millennia. The park is named after James French, an early settler who homesteaded here in the 1880s. Today, it’s a popular day-use area with 69 vehicle-accessible campsites, open year-round, offering amenities like picnic tables and fire pits. The 1.6-km French Beach Trail loops through second-growth forest, home to black-tailed deer and bald eagles, while the nearby Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, accessible from the park, offers a challenging 47-km hike to Botanical Beach. The beach is a prime spot for whale-watching, with grey whales migrating past in spring, and storm-watching in winter, when waves can reach up to 6 meters high.
